An experience that affirms her lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious
I was visiting a nursing home in Chicago when a gentleman asked if I was a Sister. When I said yes, he said, “But you are so ordinary.” My inner self just glowed as I recalled the title of our history. Yes, we are just Ordinary God’s people!
Advice for others working to advance CSA’s Mission
Never give up. God is always with you and will pull you through no matter what.
In Mark we read, “Everything is possible to one who has Faith.” It is with the help of God that we can accomplish what we set out to do.
A blessing she would like to share
I was blessed with parents who had great faith. In my journey through life I always realized that I was not alone. No matter what challenges I faced, God was always there.
How the CSA charism continues to inspire her
Charism is a word used to refer to that mysterious gift of energy that touches the heart and creates a sense of spiritual community. In my retirement here at Nazareth Court/Center I am continually inspired by the sisters who, no matter how old, continue to give of themselves to others around them. ALL part of being Sisters of St. Agnes!

A blessing she would like to share
“I kneel before God, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. And I pray that God, out of the richness of divine glory, will strengthen you inwardly with power through the working of the Spirit. May Christ dwell in your hearts through faith, so that you, being rooted and grounded in love, will be able to grasp fully the breadth, length, height and depth of Christ’s love and, with all God’s holy ones, experience this love that surpasses all understanding, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. To God—whose power now at work in us can do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine—to God be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus through all generations, world without end! Amen” (Ephesians 3:14-21)

Additional Information
I cannot remember a time when faith, prayer, grace, church, daily living, work, suffering, play, and humor were not considered normal routine and woven as a tapestry into what, as a child, I perceived to be an ordinary way of life. My mother taught me that faith is a gift freely given by God; that responsibility for appreciating that gift is mine. Both parents demonstrated a way of living that integrated prayer as routinely as eating, sleeping, working and playing. When pain or illness interrupted our lives, we dealt with it. When happier times existed, we celebrated them. We lived with a pretty grateful attitude either way.
By the time I was to enter seventh grade, my parents were able to move the family to Defiance, Ohio, where we were given the opportunity to attend a Catholic school. Those years provided additional nourishment for my spiritual life. Because the Sisters of St. Agnes were teachers at St. John School, I was connected to a community of women religious who helped me further discern a calling I had known since second grade.
As I approach the completion of 70 years as a Sister of Saint Agnes, I am grateful for my family, church, rural roots and the many people who have become a part of my living. Precious moments include the ability to laugh, knowing that we walk on sacred ground. I am aware that the mystery of every day is new and life-giving, we are all God’s people, God is always present, and we are challenged to live with generous and joyful hearts. All is gift!
What a journey!
An experience that affirms her lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious
My first mission was at St. Mary's School in Altoona, PA, a large house with many sisters. It was a practice in June for the sisters from the area to come to the Altoona house for days of retreat at the end of the school year. Being the youngest in the house, I was placed in charge of hospitality. As I greeted the sisters at the door and gave them their retreat schedule, one of the sisters who had been professed for fifty years thanked me and then told me, "I am going to chapel now to pray for perseverance in my vocation." I was struck by her words, thinking she has been a Sister for this long and still prays for perseverance. To this day, I remember her words and follow her example.
A blessing she would like to share
My blessing for you is that you will remember, no matter what your call in life. that we are all God's people. We all have dignity and deserve to receive respect and show respect to everyone. May this belief guide you throughout your life.

Additional statement
When I was young, it was considered heroic to leave home, give up possessions, and give oneself totally to God. In my idealism of seeking the best to give in life, I gratefully and blindly accepted God's call to join a group of women I admired, and who believed in me. Just like marriage or single pursuits, I was surprised and challenged by the demands of my chosen vocation as they unfolded. Conformity, silence, and structure were very hard—but they were part of the package. Love and Beloved triumphed to celebrate 25 years.
Then Vatican II sent the next heroic mandate to the whole church, but to the religious first. Authenticity of life, social needs, and institutional structures were challenged. The new call went forth. My sisters and I accepted, moved out of convent security, away from institutional life, and into simple dress. We went to the outreaches to the poor and the marginal. We pioneered new ministries that separated us from our sister co-workers, friends, and families. Long years of continuous change and transition to mainstream life required high energy, deeper love, indeed, and a new theology, recommitment, and many tears.
But, the fruit is—that we are living the mission of Jesus—with Jesus—as His instruments of peace and non-violence— through courageous endeavors and outrageous hope. It is very clear to me that I have “come this far by Faith—leaning on the Lord.”
"What is it you plan to do with your one, wild, precious life?" ~~Mary Oliver

An experience that affirms her lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious
One time when I had doubts and questions about my commitment as a vowed woman religious I happened to glance at the gold ring on my finger. I remembered the words of the Archbishop when I received the ring: "Receive this ring as a sign of God's fidelity." Jubilee is more about God's fidelity in living this consecrated life than mine. It is God's fidelity that strengthens mine.
Advice for others working to advance CSA’s Mission
Like Christ, we come to do the Father's will. We are not in this alone. We have God and each other. God shares divine gifts and powers and charisms with us through the divine indwelling within each of us, through the sacraments, through community through all the various gifts of the Trinity, and through the love that binds us together. When Jesus multiplied the loaves and fishes he engaged the disciples in helping him nourish the crowd.
A blessing she would like to share
It is such, a precious blessing to be alive, to sense, know, believe, trust in, and be empowered by God's intense personal love for each of us. "Just to be is a blessing. To live is holy." (Rabbi Abraham Heschel)
How the CSA charism continues to inspire her
Our CSA charism of hospitality continues to inspire me in welcoming persons of different religions, who are on different paths to God, who come to me for spiritual direction. I am inspired by their sincere and serious desire to deepen their relationship with God. Their earnest seeking for spiritual growth urges me to continue to be desirous and faithful in my own relationship with God, in deepening that oneness with God and with others that Jesus speaks about in John's gospel.

Advice for others working to advance CSA’s Mission
To advance CSA’s mission, always keep in mind that you, too, are a human being just the same as those you minister to. You, therefore, are enriched by—as well as enrich—those you serve. (Oh, and by the way you never know when, or how, you are ministering!) When you are sure, always witness with a joyful spirit the risen Christ as you nurture the seed of faith in the other; and show your concern for the dignity of others.
As a person yourself, stay simple, hospitable, and conscious, that through you our risen Christ can be discovered and revealed.
A blessing she would like to share
May you know the gifts God has bestowed on you so that, “The gifts you have received, you can give as a gift/gifts.” I wish you an ever-deepening relationship with God that will show itself what you so, or do—in how you say or do. A loving attitude is catchy. And may you recognize the gift/s you receive from others. Don’t bother to put on airs, be yourself. That’ll be easier on you as you get a message across and will hopefully lead those who receive to go deeper spiritually. Blessings and great joy!
How the CSA charism continues to inspire her
It feels like our charism is a natural part of me. Because of it, I know what I do, why to do it, and how to do it. Settings or circumstances may vary, but the charism doesn’t. Therefore, it is a blessing.

Life as a Sister of St. Agnes has opened my eyes and heart to the struggles of people throughout our planet and especially to the range of each person’s unique spiritual journey. Having experienced God’s mercy and love from Spanish Harlem to Portland, Oregon, from Siberia, Russia, to Nicaragua, I have come to value the complexity of being a woman religious in today’s Catholic church. While I cannot believe it is 50 years since our vow ceremony, I am ever grateful for all the people who have come into my life—those that challenged me, those that taught me God’s everlasting love. I pray that while serving the Marian University students in West Allis, Fond du Lac, Wausau, and Appleton in undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral courses, I may witness God’s love and mercy to them.

An experience that affirms her lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious
During my time as a formator, I traveled to Chicago to help organize a year-long program of presentations and prayer activities for both men and women novices. At our initial planning meeting, the group leader shared that weekly liturgies would be held on Tuesdays, following the preferences of the previous year's group.
Recognizing the importance of engaging the current participants, I asked if we could consider what this year's group might appreciate. In particular, I raised the question of how the women novices would be involved, and whether they would have the opportunity to deliver a homily, given that our gathering was not in a parish setting.
After thoughtful discussion and a focus on ensuring active participation from everyone, it was decided that every other Tuesday, the women novices would lead a prayer service and reflection. On alternate Tuesdays, the men would provide the liturgy. This arrangement acknowledged and valued the unique contributions of all members.
As we left the planning room, Fr. John approached me and expressed his gratitude, saying, “Jean, thank you for reminding us of how women can play a significant part in these activities. Sometimes we forget.” I replied, “Thanks, John. We never forget.”
Mission Statement
- Furtherance of the role of women in church and society
- Mutuality, inclusivity and collaboration
Advice for others working to advance CSA’s Mission
We, the Sisters of St. Agnes, commit ourselves to furthering the role of women in church and society. Our deep and vital union with God calls us to discern our distinct contribution as a community of women religious to the ongoing transformation of the world. We recognize the reality of oppression in the lives of women and the effect of that oppression on the dignity and rights of all people.
We commit ourselves, therefore, to work for justice and reconciliation endeavoring to:
- cultivate an inclusive spirituality which empowers both women and men
- promote educational opportunities which liberate women
- network to transform existing structures in church and society which oppress women.
A blessing she would like to share
A Prayer
May God bless you with discomfort
at easy answers, half-truths, and
superficial relationships, so that
you will live deep in your heart.
May God bless you with anger at
injustice, oppression, and exploitation
of people and the earth
so that you will work for justice,
equity, and peace.
May God bless you with tears to
shed for those who suffer
so you will reach out your hands
to comfort them and change
their pain into joy.
And may God bless you with
the foolishness to think that you
can make a difference in the world,
so you will do the things which
others say cannot be done.
—Sr. Ruth Fox, OSB, 1985
How the CSA charism continues to inspire her
The song title, Do You Remember the Call?, perfectly captures my personal journey. It serves as a reminder of the invitation to respond with commitment and faith throughout my life.
As I celebrate sixty years as a member of CSA, my heart is filled with gratitude. Over the years, I have been given countless opportunities to grow, stretch, and be challenged. These experiences have shaped my response to the Call and have been integral to my life as a vowed woman religious.
I am committed to continuing the mission of Jesus, drawing strength from the legacy of the sisters who have gone before me. Their example as “joyful witnesses” inspires me to reveal God’s love, mercy, and compassion. As women of courage, we show pastoral concern for those whose faith life or human dignity is threatened, striving always to uplift and support them.
(CSA Constitutions #1):
Called by God in the power of the Spirit. we continue Jesus’ mission of revealing his Father’s love according to the purpose and spirit of our Founders.

An experience that affirms her lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious
At the time I had just decided to leave active ministry and the service I called home for 23 years, the office phone rang. The caller, our then General Superior, invited me to consider the opportunity to minister at our Motherhouse as the Administrator. The question was not off-putting, but the invitation did not coincide with my plans to return to and foster my love of reading and engagement in volunteer activities while establishing a somewhat slower pace. We never know when, from where, or in what form the call to serve arrives. Saying yes was not difficult since I was longing to live closer to our sisters-little did I realize that working at the Motherhouse would be about as close as one could come to living among the sisters. A new, unsought, and unexpected ministry has afforded the opportunity to reconnect with my Sisters, serve in new ways, continue learning, all while fostering the love of reading.
Advice for others working to advance CSA’s Mission
Opportunities to advance our mission present themselves daily. While it is important to focus on what captures the immediate attention, a spirit of openness to opportunities beyond what is immediate exist and can lead to what is deeper and perhaps more profoundly far-reaching.
A blessing she would like to share
While we live in a forward motion, we understand what we have lived by looking back to where we have been, what we have done, and with whom we have traveled the path we call life.
Today, I understand, as at no other time, how pivotal people
have been to my graced life. Many of the people who either suggested the way, pointed me in the right direction, or walked part of the journey with me are no longer here in person. However, they live on in every aspect of my living. All the good achieved, any accomplishment attained have not been mine alone. It is my prayer that others are so richly blessed by wise companions, insightful mentors, trusted friends as have touched my life.
How the CSA charism continues to inspire her
As a foundation we undertook guiding the little ones in the faith primarily through education. Our history is rich with examples of caring for those in need. A spirit of hospitality so vital to a sense of welcome and acceptance has always been a hallmark of the Community. Today we no longer find ourselves in the classrooms of old, but that has not stopped us--today we participate in peace marches, minister to the poor at various sites, are ecologically engaged, and care deeply for the future of our earthly home. It is a blessing that the avenues in which our charism can be manifest are so varied. It is inspiring that given our growing limitations, we want to touch the lives of those in need whenever, wherever, and however we can.

An experience that affirms her lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious
During an important and serious conversation, I once had with the General Superior of the Congregation, she told me “You know Katie there are reasons why we come and begin the journey of Religious Life but the important reason is why we STAY …This still remain affirming and important to me.
Advice for others working to advance CSA’s Mission
Listen, Reflect, Encourage and Respond to the needs and Transformation of the World, the Church and Humanity.
A blessing she would like to share
I have been blessed in so many ways and so many times over the 83 years of living. My parents and family have always supported and encouraged me in my journey.
A blessing that continues to remain close to my heart and continues to shed light on who I am and what I am about is the opportunity I was given to discern, prepare and minister in Latin America, primarily in Nicaragua.
Discerning with the Maryknoll program in California, and cultural and Language studies in Bolivia helped me to understand and experience what is TRULY INTERCULTURAL LIVING AND MINISTERING.
I am forever grateful to the teachers, colleagues and students for making me feel welcome on my arrival to Nicaragua.
I had wonderful mentors who helped me remember that I am/was a visitor in another country with its unique culture. I will not forget or loose my own culture but will learn, accept and participate in another culture. That is the essence of INTERCULTURAL LIVING AND MINISTERING.
How the CSA charism continues to inspire her
Wherever I am and whatever my age, our mission and heritage call me to a missionary zeal for nurturing the seed of faith and to be concerned for those whose faith life or human dignity is threatened.
Given my age I do what I can and am present when and however I am able to ensure that I hold in my heart the needs of the many people who are in need.

A blessing she would like to share
Blessed is the word that reverberates with every beat of my heart as I celebrate my 6Oth JUBILEE as a Sister of St. Agnes.
God's call to me to be a woman religious was so powerful and so clear. It was a call I didn't ask for or even initially desire. Having placed myself in the Hands of the Living God, I have not been disappointed—frightened and resistant at times—but what an amazing journey it has been!!!
These many years I have carried in my heart God's words from the prophet Micah, "All I ask of you is to act justly, to love tenderly, and to walk humbly with God." As I have attempted to do this, I have received abundant blessings poured out and overflowing. I have been loved and have loved on this sacred journey.
The gratitude I feel for my family, friends, sisters, associates and partners in ministry—for all who have walked with me, companioned me, ministered with me—is immense and deep.
My ministries of teaching, of administration, of clinical social work, of community leadership, and of spiritual direction have been about the mission of Jesus.
Through the grace of God, I have had the awesome privilege of touching the lives of people, and of being touched and transformed by them.
God has been gracious to me beyond what I could ever have imagined when I vowed my life to God as a Sister of St. Agnes 60 years ago. I am Blessed and Grateful.

An experience that affirms her lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious
In 2002, I cofounded CORE El Centro, a natural healing center, with Jayne Ader, one of my colleagues. For 21 years, we had the privilege of walking with women, men, and children as they healed, connected, and reconnected with their divine essence. These transformative moments changed their lives and those of their families. CORE El Centro continues to serve to this day. Our lives as women religious give us the opportunity to serve the most vulnerable. I am so grateful to walk this journey with my CSA sisters as we respond to those whose faith life or human dignity is threatened.
Advice for others working to advance CSA’s Mission
Today, our world, our communities, and our families are being ripped apart. As we seek to be a healing presence in these difficult times, we must be grounded and rooted in prayer and open to where, when, and how God is calling us to be a compassionate, loving expression of Divine love.
A blessing she would like to share
I am deeply grateful to be a vowed member of the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes. Having the opportunity to live out the gospel mission and to share faith, hope, and love in community with my sisters has been profound.
How the CSA charism continues to inspire her
It reminds me each day that I am called by God to be a healing presence in a world marked by division, deep hatred, and unrelenting pain. It is in our simplicity and hospitality that each of us can touch the hearts and souls of others and provide a safe haven for deep healing to occur.
Thoughts on Religious Life
All walks of life are expressions of Grace. One’s choice of commitment/vocation is a call by God to be a conduit for divine love and to share that love in our world. I believe each of us in our choice of vocation is called to live a life that ignites the fire within; to live passionately the Grace given by God.
Religious life is one expression of God’s grace. It is through the vows of celibate chastity, poverty and obedience that women religious give expression to our call to be love and express that love with those we encounter.
It has been a tremendous gift to be a member of the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes for the past 40 years. There are no words to capture the immense gratitude and appreciation I have for CSA and the life we have shared in community and in the living out of the Gospel mission. It is clear that we are better together than alone.

Through the following organizations, I have followed my commitment to the Gospel mission of my CSA associate relationship. Knights of Columbus 3rd and 4th Degree volunteered with community programs and took clothing to sister parish in Arkansas. I am a member of AMVETS, Disabled Veterans and Viet Nam Veterans, again volunteering in community projects. I also have volunteered at King Nursing Home and served meals to the homeless veterans. Serving the poor and disenfranchised of society through the Knights of Columbus, I have driven clothing to our sister parish in Arkansas for the migrant workers that come to work in the tobacco fields as they cannot take the toxic clothing they wear into their homes or housing units after they have worn them working in the fields all day. I have also stayed with a fellow Knight who was dying of cancer so his wife could work. I attend different programs at CSA as well as at our parish to maintain my spiritual growth. I go to Associate events and pray with the Sisters.
An experience that affirms his commitment to the associate relationship
Being an Associate of CSA has brought me closer to Jesus through my prayer life. As I participate in Associate activities, I have become more aware of the poor and disenfranchised of society especially with working through veterans organizations serving food and donating clothing to the homeless veteran. I also find a calling to pray and am more aware of those who need our assistance. I try to set an example of saying a meal prayer before meals even when we have company, and they may be of another faith or no faith at all. Following the Beatitudes and the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy has made me more aware of our global church. Meeting Bishop Robert Morneau and attending one of his retreats was one of the most inspirational experiences of my life and I realized that taking time to just BE is often very important in my life so I can listen to the call of what the CSA Mission Statement means to me.
When we visited Bisbee, Arizona and Mexico, I experienced the significance of the wall. We also visited a family in Nex Mexico and was how they lived.
A blessing he would like to share
Knowing we have the support of their prayers for our family and my wife and I.
What drew him to enter in relationship with CSA as an associate
By becoming very familiar with the sisters while our children were education K-16, by the sisters in Fond du Lac. Also getting to know the sisters on a personal level while my wife worked for them at Nazareth Heights during 1970s through early 1990s.
What it means to be celebrating his Jubilee as an associate of CSA
Excited and realizing how my faith and volunteer work has more meaning as I try to live out their mission statement.

What drew her to enter into associate relationship with CSA
Long time friendships with many sisters over the years, such as Sr. Maralyn Homiak and Sr. Emily Schug. I went on a pilgrimage visit to the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe with Sr. Emily Schug and remember her reflections on her roles and values as a CSA sister.
What it means to be celebrating her Jubilee as an associate of CSA
I learned to "quiet myself" more each year and am celebrating with more spiritual reading and attending Mass and Adoration. Celebrating means seeing all people as who and what they are, as unique children of God, always to be treated with dignity and respect no matter what.
