Gov. Tony Evers, together with Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Secretary Karen Hyun and Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa Chairwoman Liz Arbuckle, yesterday joined members of the Wild Rice Stewardship Council and stewardship advocates on the Bad River Reservation to celebrate Wisconsin’s first-ever “Wild Rice Week” to raise awareness of and appreciation for the value of wild rice in the state.

Wild Rice Week was established by Executive Order #277, which was signed by Gov. Evers last year as part of the Evers Administration’s Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebrations to build upon previous efforts of the Administration to reaffirm the state’s commitment to respecting Tribal sovereignty and fostering strong government-to-government relationships by bolstering the education and awareness of Tribal Treaty Rights and sovereignty and promoting stewardship to protect cultural wild rice resources.  

“Wild rice is a critical part of food security and culture for many Native Nations, and preserving and celebrating the long-established practice of wild rice stewardship in our state is essential to strengthening our government-to-government relationships and our efforts to protect our natural resources,” said Gov. Evers. “My administration and I are committed to ensuring the state is a strong partner in supporting and respecting Tribal sovereignty, treaty rights, cultural practices, and food resources. This week, and every week, we recognize the importance of this resource as well as the hard work of our Tribal partners, advocates, and those who have been hunting and gathering from these lands and waters for centuries to protect wild rice in Wisconsin and ensure its presence for future generations.”

“Wild rice is an important natural resource in Wisconsin, supporting healthy wetlands as a food source and habitat for wildlife and serving a vital role in the culture, identity and spirituality for many Tribal Nations in Wisconsin,” said DNR Secretary Hyun. “Protecting wild rice benefits both the health of our waters and the strong traditions tied to it.”

Wisconsin voters will decide on a constitutional amendment that could have significant impacts on public education, employment, contracting, and government programs across the state. While the ballot language references discrimination and preferential treatment, the proposed amendment would also limit the use of certain equity-focused policies and programs.

From the moment of its release, Pope Leo’s groundbreaking encyclical Magnifica Humanitas (“Magnificent Humanity”) sparked dialogue far beyond Catholic circles. In it, Pope Leo calls for people of all backgrounds to engage in collaborative discussion of the risks and promises of artificial intelligence and reminds the world that, even amid the monumental changes brought on by AI, “we must lovingly safeguard the grandeur of humanity… the splendor of which no machine can ever replace.”

This Public Dialogue will bring Catholic leaders into conversation with leading voices in technology and AI policy to take up questions at the heart of Magnifica Humanitas: What does it mean to safeguard human dignity in the age of AI? How can we build a digital environment and economy that puts people first and serves the common good? What would a human-centered vision of AI ask of lawmakers, of employers, and of each of us? And where can Catholics most effectively help shape policy conversations about technology?

Participants:
Archbishop Gabriele Caccia is the Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See to the United States and was appointed to this post by Pope Leo XIV in March. He has previously served as Nuncio to Lebanon and to the Philippines, and most recently as Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations in New York.

Vilas Dhar has served on the United Nations Secretary-General’s High-Level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence and is the U.S. Government’s nominated expert to the Global Partnership on AI. He is president of the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, one of the world’s foremost philanthropies advancing AI for public purpose.

Molly Kinder is a leading expert on AI and its impact on work. She is currently the founding CEO of the Breakwater Initiative, a new organization building the policy response to AI's disruption of work. Previously, she was a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution studying AI's economic impacts. 

Anna Rowlands holds the St. Hilda Chair in Catholic Social Thought and Practice at the University of Durham. She is a member of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development and spoke at the Vatican’s launch of Magnifica Humanitas in May.

Jasmine Sun covers the culture and politics of AI as a contributor at the Atlantic and on her Substack, and has written for other outlets including the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. She previously led the core product team at Substack and has worked in AI policy.

Eduardo Peñalver, president of Georgetown University, will open the dialogue. Kim Daniels, director of the Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life, will moderate the conversation.

Join the Laudato Si’ Action Platform for a global Season of Creation gathering exploring the Laudato Si’ Goal of Community Resilience and Empowerment.
Together, we’ll look at how communities are building the relationships, local leadership, and practical capacity they need to respond when ecological and social pressures intensify.

How do we resist a “throwaway culture” and embrace a "better kind of politics" that seeks the common good, prioritizes the poor, and protects the environment?

Judith Enck, author of "The Problem with Plastic" and founder of Beyond Plastics, will share with us insights into the impacts of plastics on Mother Earth and vulnerable communities. Judith will outline how we can get involved at the local and state levels to cut toxic plastic pollution. Students from Siena University will also share their work to combat plastic pollution in New York State.

Season of Creation 2026 begins on September 1 and invites us to move from hope to action. Hope is not passive; it is lived and shared through daily choices, community life, prayer, and concrete acts of care. Ecological
conversion grows step by step—through relationships restored, creation protected, and communities strengthened. The next chapter of Laudato Si’ begins with us, wherever we are.

On Thursday, September 17, Sister Dianne Bergant, CSA, will talk about unity and diversity from a theological perspective. 

The event will take place at the Prairie Theater and Event Center (400 University Avenue, Fond du Lac, WI). Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with remarks beginning at 6 p.m. The audience is invited to engage with the speaker via a Q&A segment after remarks and again informally during a reception in The Winnebago Room with heavy hors d’oeuvres. During the reception, two tables will be available for optional participation in facilitated discussion between attendees.  

This event is the second in a three-part series on the theme “To Form A More Perfect Union:  Division and Unity in the USA at 250” presented by the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes.

Speakers will explore the enduring principles of the U.S. Constitution and their relevance to today’s challenges. From the roots of representative democracy to the evolving meaning of liberty and justice, each of the three lectures will aim to deepen public understanding and inspire constructive engagement. After watching the film, Madison native, LisaAnn Trembath, had this to share with me: “I watched this movie knowing it would be tough, knowing I would weep, knowing I would despair. I was moved by some true spiritual gems: for example, the Red Crescent worker who helped Hind recite prayers to God from the Koran. I was torn apart by the moment when Hind said her family was not sleeping anymore, they were all dead. (What had to happen in her forming brain for her to understand this over the period of an hour or two?)

Why would I suggest anyone watch this movie? Several reasons. One - it really happened, and we can’t turn away from the evil that is being enacted by the Israeli military on innocent people in Gaza. Several forensic reports have been released since the incident went public, and there is no doubt of the accuracy of the story. Two - we see the power of faith and prayer and goodness in the rescue workers, and in little Hind as she prays to God for rescue. Three - we can lament together the loss of the tens of thousands of children’s lives by examining one story of one little girl. Four - there is a painful beauty in true art, and this film is artfully made and should be widely seen.”

Sr. Damien Marie Savino, FSE

What an interesting convergence that the Jubilee Year of St. Francis, commemorating the 800th anniversary of his death, coincides with the release of Pope Leo XIV’s landmark encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas! This lecture, given by Sister Damien Marie Savino, FSE, author of the recently published book, Learning the Language of Creation: Catholic Social Teaching and Integral Ecology, will explore the Pope’s encyclical through the eyes of Franciscan spirituality.
What can St. Francis of Assisi teach us about “magnificent humanity” in the midst of a technologically dominated world? 

From her perspective as a Franciscan Sister of the Eucharist and a Visiting Professor of Engineering at University of Notre Dame, with a concurrent appointment in the McGrath Institute for Church Life, Sister Damien Marie will reflect on how Franciscan spirituality can serve as an antidote to the excesses of the technocratic paradigm and assist the faithful in navigating the minefields of a technocratic culture.

About the speaker:
Sr. Damien Marie Savino is a Franciscan Sister of the Eucharist currently serving as the Melchor Visiting Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences (CEEES) at the University of Notre Dame, with a concurrent appointment in the McGrath Institute for Church Life. She holds a doctorate in Civil and Environmental Engineering from The Catholic University of America, from whom she received the Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award in 2022. She also holds master’s degrees in theology and soil science. Prior to this appointment, she served as Dean of Science and Sustainability at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Her scientific and engineering research focused on environmental remediation of soil and groundwater contamination, the environmental impacts of endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and the application of resilience theory to ecosystem health. For the past ten years, she has become increasingly involved in interdisciplinary projects and has lectured and written widely on Laudato Si’ and integral ecology, science and faith, ecology and theology, and questions of technology. She is the writer and co-producer of the six-episode documentary series, Creation (Salt and Light Television, 2015), and the founder and director of the “Educating for Laudato Si’ Initiative” (praisebetoyou.org, 2021). Her interdisciplinary book entitled Learning the Language of Creation: Catholic Social Teaching and Integral Ecology was published by Liturgical Press in December 2025, as part of the Enacting Catholic Social Tradition book series.
