Defend Shareholder Rights

Any day now, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is expected to propose changes severely restricting who can file shareholder proposals or whether companies must consider them at all. This will, in effect, eliminate a primary tool for investors to raise critical concerns, weakening accountability at a time when it is urgently needed. But you can help preempt the assault on shareholder rights by lending your personal or organizational support to this petition.

Shareholder proposals have long driven meaningful change. They have pushed companies to disclose and manage climate risk as extreme weather disrupts operations and threatens workers. They have exposed human rights abuses in global supply chains, prompting companies to audit practices and reduce legal and reputational exposure. They have advanced transparency in corporate political spending, ensuring shareholder capital is not deployed in ways that undermine democratic institutions or long-term societal well-being.

Our colleagues and friends at Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility, the Shareholder Rights Group, US/SIF, Freedom to Invest and For the Long-Term are urging the SEC to preserve the shareholder proposal rule.
