Bending the Arc references a quote by Rev. Dr. King who said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” This digital newsletter from the CSA Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation office showcases the work of changemakers, opportunities to learn, and opportunities for you to help “bend the arc” toward justice. Catholics Take Action for Environment Protections
The U.S. Catholic Community is making a joint comment to EPA Administrator, Lee Zeldin, asking him to stop the U.S. Administration from rescinding the “Endangerment Finding”: which protects the Earth and our health.
Please add your signature to the online petition to urge Mr. Zeldin to do what is right.
What’s happening?
On July 28, Lee Zeldin proposed repealing the Endangerment Finding, which would dismantle the legal basis and duty for the government to regulate greenhouse gases from vehicles and power plants. This repeal threatens the EPA’s legal authority to limit climate pollution. Climate change is real and urgent, as Pope Francis called it “one of humanity’s principal challenges.” The U.S. has both moral and legal obligations to reduce emissions and protect vulnerable communities. Without the Endangerment Finding, the EPA forfeits its legal authority to limit climate pollution.
What’s next?
The EPA’s announcement of the proposed repeal of the Endangerment Finding initiated a 456-day EPA comment period. A final rule is expected before the end of the year. Franciscan Action Network and Catholic partners hope to submit 5000+ signatures on a “joint comment” to the EPA by September 1, 2025.
“As an ecologist, as well as a Franciscan, I urge you to support the current guidelines and regulations. Stop this obvious denial of climate change based on years of sound science. These regulations are needed to protect all of us and the future.” - Dr. Ann Mayo, OSF
