Fond du Lac Homeless Shelter Ribbon Cutting
The St. Katharine Drexel Shelter, Fond du Lac's first stand-alone 24/7 homeless shelter, will open during the week of May 23, 2022. Standing under the entryway that reads, "Archway to New Beginnings," representatives from St. Vincent de Paul Society, Solutions Center, and the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes participated in a ribbon cutting on May 19.
During the fall of 2020, the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Solutions Center, the two central organizations that serve the homeless in Fond du Lac, announced plans for a new homeless shelter for Fond du Lac County. The shelter fills a “crying” need in our city and county. Nearly complete on land at the St. Vincent de Paul site, it will integrate services and provide housing on site for homeless men, women, and families. The new family shelter will house 15 families and the single shelter will house 12 women and 24 men. The lead gift for this project came from Drexel Building Supply of Campbellsport, and the shelter will be named after St. Katharine Drexel though there is no direct connection between the donor and the saint.
CSA has made substantial commitments to this project, including 197 solar blocks from the Community Solar Garden in Fond du Lac. In this way, we wish to show our long-term commitment to the sustainability of this needed service. This space is to be more than a shelter; it is also a program. The aim, according to the director of homeless services in Fond du Lac, is to assist people to build a network of support, find affordable housing, gain employment and the knowledge required to move out of the shelter. CSA is honored to collaborate in this effort so needed in this community. As our Statement of Mission so eloquently states, “… we, too, are among the needy and are enriched by those we serve.”
The Shelter will host a Community Open House on May 21. This is an excellent opportunity for people in the Fond du Lac Community to tour the Shelter and see, first hand, how it will provide a safe and structured living environment for singles and families experiencing homelessness.
