Alliant Energy: Fond du Lac take solar blocks to 100% fully subscribed

By CSA Sisters of St. Agnes

As the holiday season approaches, Alliant Energy is thankful to the community of Fond du Lac and proud to announce all 4,000 solar blocks for its community solar garden in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin have been acquired. The company reached this milestone thanks to a donation from the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes to St. Vincent de Paul Fond du Lac County. The Sisters acquired and donated the last 197 solar blocks to the St. Katharine Drexel Shelter, set to open in spring 2022.

“We are committed to the care for creation and want to extend that care and sustainability to St. Vincent de Paul as they build a much-needed shelter for those in need in the Fond du Lac community,” said Sister Jean Steffes, the congregation’s general superior. “Our gift to them is a win-win. Shelter is needed and clean energy is needed. Our hope is the solar block donation will help sustain the shelter’s operations by reducing their energy expenses for the 20-year life of the solar garden.”

The Sisters of St. Agnes are committed to doing everything in their power to help create a sustainable planet. They’ve invested in renewable energy sources, such as an 881 solar panel array, installed on their property in 2015, that provides 50% of their energy. Their subscription to Alliant Energy’s solar garden completes the convent’s transition to 100% solar energy.

“I’m grateful to see the amazing collaboration that exists in the Fond du Lac community and to the Sisters of St. Agnes for their generosity,” said David de Leon, president of Alliant Energy’s Wisconsin energy company. “We’re honored to provide renewable energy that builds stronger communities. Achieving 100% subscriptions signifies the interest and demand of our customers to help all enjoy the benefits of clean, renewable energy.”

The 1-megawatt solar garden is expected to be operational by the end of the year.

Although the Fond du Lac community solar garden is fully subscribed, Alliant Energy electric customers can join a waitlist to receive a notification when solar blocks become available if customers leave the program or when the company launches a new community solar garden in Wisconsin. There is no obligation to purchase blocks by joining the waitlist.

Alliant Energy’s community solar program provides an opportunity for customers to share the benefits of solar power without the need to install solar panels on their property. They receive a credit on their monthly electric bills for every block of energy they purchase. The credits begin once the facility is in service and will continue for 20 years. Participants will realize energy savings over the life of the solar facility.

Initially announced in December 2020, the Fond du Lac community solar project puts the company on the path to achieve its Clean Energy Vision, which includes a goal to attain net-zero carbon dioxide emissions from electricity generation by 2050.

Located west of the Highway 151/Hickory Road intersection, the project is built on land leased from Michels Corporation, an industry-leading utility contractor headquartered in nearby Brownsville. Michels is the anchor tenant of the community solar garden.

Alliant Energy has plans for multiple community solar projects across Wisconsin and Iowa.
