The mission of the Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation ministry is to explore CSA's distinct contribution to the ongoing, nonviolent transformation of the world towards peace, justice and ecology. This work embraces the efforts of sisters, associates, co-workers and others who share the CSA vision. We live out the mission to bring about systemic change by using the lens of nonviolence to focus on the issues of women, children, health care, globalization (especially as it affects Latin America), seamless ethic of life.

The Other Twin Pandemic

December 03, 2020
By Sister Ruth Battaglia, CSA

Fratelli Tutti and dove

Some economic rules have proved effective for growth, but not for integral human development. Wealth has increased, but together with inequality, with the result that “new forms of poverty are emerging”. #21

While one part of humanity lives in opulence, another part sees its own dignity denied, scorned or trampled upon, and its fundamental rights discarded or violated”.  What does this tell us about the equality of rights grounded in innate human dignity? #22

Homelessness and Hunger

If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.  James 2: 15-16

As COVID-19 continues to impact the economy, more people are finding themselves homeless and/or without food while those already destitute prior to the pandemic are worse off. At the same time the Stock Market is setting record highs. The wealthy have grown richer while many enter poverty. By the end of this month more than 13 million people stand to lose their unemployment benefits. There is still no agreement in Congress over a relief package. Contact your members of Congress to demand a package that keeps people from losing their homes and going hungry.

As a part of your Christmas giving remember the hungry and be generous in supporting your local food bank.

From the Justice Conference of Women Religious

We invite you as a faith leader to sign on to the Root Causes Policy Framework developed by our coalition of grassroots and faith-based organizations – along with religious leaders – in Central America, Mexico and the US. The deadline is Friday, December 4. CSA has already signed on as a congregation.
We offer this framework for action, with the goal of fundamentally changing economic, migration, development and human rights policies in the region while helping all of our families and communities to survive this crisis and rebuild a future with justice and equity. We will be engaging policymakers in the US, Mexico and Central America around these priorities over the next year.
You can view the final version of the framework here.

Transform American Democracy

From Network:

President-elect and the 117th Congress must prioritize the For the People Act in 2021 -- an overhaul of voting, elections, money-in-politics, and ethics laws that will make our democracy more inclusive, more representative, and less partisan. In order to to rebuild and heal this nation, we need to start with a solid foundation.

The For the People Act (H.R. 1) is a once-in-a-generation package of proven reforms that would:

- Expand and protect voting rights and access to the ballot;
- Put ordinary Americans ahead of Big Money donors;
- End gerrymandering so that electoral districts are fairly drawn;
- Clean up government and hold elected officials to the highest ethical standards.
