The mission of the Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation ministry is to explore CSA's distinct contribution to the ongoing, nonviolent transformation of the world towards peace, justice and ecology. This work embraces the efforts of sisters, associates, co-workers and others who share the CSA vision. We live out the mission to bring about systemic change by using the lens of nonviolence to focus on the issues of women, children, health care, globalization (especially as it affects Latin America), seamless ethic of life.

Pope Francis is calling for an ecological conversion for all who live on this planet through his encyclical, Laudado Si’.  Hence, throughout the Season of Creation, we will be introducing the seven goals of the Laudato Si’ Action Platform into our daily reflections. This week we focus on:

GOAL#7:
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND PARTICIPATORY ACTION

Goal #7 encourages the development of cultures and policies that protect our common home and all who share it.

Each day provides you with an opportunity to See, Reflect, and Act.

To help you "See" the signs of our times,
we provide a relevant resource to read.

To supplement as you "Reflect" on the text,
we provide a relevant quotation from Laudato Si'.

To inspire you to "Act" in the world,
we share a relevant action that CSA has taken.

Finally, we will provide a daily Intercession to remind you that you are not doing this difficult work alone.

If you prefer to receive the details for the whole week in one email please send email to Tracy Abler at table@csasisters.org

GOAL#5:
ECOLOGICAL EDUCATION

GOAL#6:
ECOLOGICAL SPIRITUALITY

Goal #5 is about re-thinking and re-designing curricular and institutional reform in the spirit of integral ecology in order to foster ecological awareness and transformative action. .
Goal #6 recovers a religious vision of God's creation and encourages greater contact with the natural world in a spirit of wonder, praise, joy, and gratitude.

The Amazon is the world's largest rainforest and a treasure unlike any other. The Amazon rainforest serves as one of Earth’s largest reservoirs of carbon dioxide, helping regulate global climate patterns through the sequestration and storage of carbon dioxide in above-ground bio mass and soil.

Tragically, we might be unwittingly destroying one of our best defenses against climate change. Drought, rising temperatures, and deforestation are mitigating the Amazon’s capacity to absorb carbon dioxide and increasing its net carbon emissions. According to AmazonAid.org, experts say that at the current rate of destruction, the Amazon could be gone in 40 years.

REFLECT

Quoting Saint John Paul II: Christians in their turn “realize that their responsibility within creation, and their duty towards nature and the Creator, are an essential part of their faith.” - Laudato Si' 64

When nature is viewed solely as a source of profit and gain, this has serious consequences for society. This … has engendered immense inequality, injustice and acts of violence against the majority of humanity, since resources end up in the hands of the first comer or the most powerful: the winner takes all. Completely at odds with this model are the ideals of harmony, justice, fraternity and peace as proposed by Jesus.  - Laudato Si' 82

CSA works to practice fair and sustainable purchasing by supporting ethical businesses, taking a "total cost of ownership approach" to purchases. Issues of Reflections & Connections, CSA's quarterly publication of mission and ministry stories, are printed on FSC Mix paper. Products that bear this label are made using a mixture of materials from FSC-certified forests, recycled materials, and/or FSC controlled wood. While controlled wood is not from FSC certified forests, it mitigates the risk of the material originating from unacceptable sources.

By becoming aware of where consumer products come from and becoming a mindful consumer, we can do our part to protect places like the Amazon Forest, and help save our planet. The Amazon Aid Foundation provides a list of ways to be a better consumer.

INTERCESSION

That our actions may help to bring about the urgent and far-reaching transformation needed to restore the health of the planet and prevent severe devastation to life now and in the future, we pray.
