"We are daily blessed by the spacious and gracious Presence of God that companions each of us on this journey of life, love, and faithfulness. This unfolding rose represents the ever evolving Mystery of the Graced presence of God's Love over the lifetimes of those celebrating Jubilee. We burst forth in celebration of them and the multiple ways they have nurtured so many with their service, inspiration, and encouragement. With gratitude, we celebrate the wonderful, colorful beauty of their wisdom and presence in our world today."

An experience that affirms your lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious
My life as a Sister of St. Agnes spans 80 years of ministering among many cultures in the United States, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Honduras. Sometime after the first sisters volunteered to go to Nicaragua, I also asked to become a missionary there; however, instead of becoming a missionary in a foreign country, I spent more than 20 years teaching in small rural areas, small towns in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana, in schools in Harlem and Bronx, New York, and in an orphanage for Native American children in Michigan. Only much later was my desire to be a foreign missionary in Latin America realized. My first missionary experience happened in 1967. Sister Paulette Shaw, Sister Margaret Rose Vanden Heuvel and I arrived in Boca de los Sapos near Guayaquil, Ecuador. This was one of the poorest missions where the Sisters of St. Agnes have ever worked. My ministry there was varied especially because I was able to drive sisters and catechists to the rural areas to teach and to provide medical care for the poor. Many times, after driving the sisters to deliver a baby at the home of a woman in labor, I held the lantern while the sister assisted in the birth of the baby. I especially recall the times I drove the sisters to Guayaquil. This meant I had to drive the car as far as the road went, and then onto a barge which would take us to the other side of the river. I will always remember one particular occasion when we took with us a man and his wife who was in labor. While we were on the barge, it was evident the baby would not wait any longer. Sister Paulette moved quickly into action in the back seat of the car. I will never forget the feeling I had when she handed me the baby to hold while she cared for the mother. Is it any wonder we always referred to the barge as “the Baby Barge” after that?

Share a story about an experience that affirms your lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious.
My first call was at an early age but it was put on hold due to my mother’s death and my brothers were called to service (WW2). A few years later I answered my second call –since I had no talent or desire to be an educator or in health care – so with no other wish I’ve been content to be a homemaker for 55 years as my service to the community, to share the gifts that I have.
Share words of advice for others working to advance CSA’s Mission.
The goal of life – be a happy person – positive with an accepting attitude.
What is a blessing you would like to share?
I enjoyed the many people I worked with in my ministry. Those that I lived with, young and old, have enriched my life, inspired and supported me. Camaraderie with homemakers made it a happy and wonderful life.
How does the CSA charism continue to inspire you?
I continue to be hospitable and have developed an attitude of gratitude and count my many blessings. I count on God’s providence and trust that whatever will be, will be, as the future is not mine to see.

a blessing she would like to share
I have always felt blessed to be involved with ministries that are life-giving! I was in teaching for 35 years; now I am a massage therapist and I think it combines both teaching and healing ministries. Being with others who share similar values is a big support in living a dedicated life.
How the CSA charism continues to inspire her
The CSA charism is an impetus for me to keep my focus outward – in other words “other centered.” Throughout our history CSA had adapted to the needs of the times and the charism keeps reminding us to do that, it keeps calling us forward.

An experience that affirms your lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious
As a vowed woman religious, I belong to the Congregation and, as such, share in their good works. My story is about participation in a Mission much bigger than what I could ever do alone. Corporate stances were formulated; stances that intimately involve the story of my ministry direction. One stance is commitment to end the death penalty. Through Catholic Mobilizing Network (CMN) I receive notices about imminent executions which give me an opportunity to write to governors and parole boards asking for clemency on behalf of inmate. Through our Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) office, I receive notices with addresses of prisoners on death row whose dates of execution are imminent, and write personally to each one. I will close with a quote from an inmate’s return letter to me. “I truly appreciate your prayers and good thoughts… Know that I will be thinking of you and all the Sisters of St. Agnes and will keep you in my prayers.” (Jose)
advice for others working to advance CSA’s Mission
CSA’s Mission embraces every aspect of life and challenges you to serve others as a ministry. Discern statements that call you with passion. The call requires your dedication that through you … “the Risen Christ be discovered and revealed.” (CSA Mission Statement)
a blessing she would like to share
I am so grateful for the profound influence my aunt, Sr. Mary Rita Golias, CSA, had on my call to enter religious life in the Congregation of St. Agnes. Her happiness, friendliness and pride in being a member of the Congregation still inspire me to this day.
How the CSA charism continues to inspire her
Charism is an energy that never rests. Its energy springs from the call to CSA Mission. The inspiration comes the daily example of others whose lives give generous witness to the Risen Christ in our world.

Reflections on religIous life
Only this is asked of you: to act justly, to love tenderly, and to walk humbly with God.
Each “requirement” is significant in reflecting on how one lives. Thinking specifically on the past 60 years I am humbled by the abundance of blessings that have filled my life. I continually remind myself that ALL is gift, no matter how it comes packaged. Each is unique!
In recent years I have frequently remarked: “God gets us where GOD needs us to be at any given time.” While that sounds simplistic, I could never have imagined the directions my life as a Sister of St. Agnes have taken me.
I often recall the first line on a banner in the Faculty room at St. Joseph's in Hays, KS that read "Children Learn What They Live..." That is a life-long reality for each of us that could read: "Life teaches us."
For nearly three decades I told myself and others. “I am in education, (my childhood dream) and I love what I am doing. When I am too old to do that I will be too old to do anything else.” So, how did I get where I am today? How many paths have I been invited to follow? How many reminders were there to “walk humbly with God” especially as each new path pulled me away from a ministry I loved only to embrace another.
Friends used to laugh that I had a song for everything and admittedly I did have quite a repertoire from grade school, Girl Scouts, Bean Picking, etc. It is no surprise that whenever God posed a new invitation I would often pray through song- at times just a single line or phrase. One refrain in particular that I spent a lot of time with and that still accompanies my reflections today--"I will go Lord, if you lead me, I will hold your people in my heart."
For the last nearly 10 years I have been in a personally unchartered ministry, the elderly, sick elderly and their families. For the most part my family of origin has not been graced with length of years and gerontology was only a concept. The wisdom figures that grace my life today are gift. All that is asked of me is that I “seek justice, love tenderly, and walk humbly with God." My response: “I will hold your people in my heart.”

An experience that affirms her lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious
I have a marvelous life!!! When I look back into these 60 years and realize the places I have lived, the people who became part of my life, the many experiences that have enriched me, the family I was given and the good times we share and seeing the beginning of the next generation; this is all beyond my wildest dreams. I can truly say that religious life has made me who I am. What has kept my life together is prayer. I thank my God that I have “showed up to pray” just about every day. Prayer has been my comfort, my support, my psychiatric couch. Prayer has brought me to this day and the living out of my religious vocation. I thank my Community for opening out to me school administration, where I discovered my innate talents that are a part of who I am. My greatest blessing in education has been the opportunity to serve minority communities in Mississippi and Arizona and learn from another culture. And as I served at the Leo House with involvement in UNANIMA International and the United Nations.

I made that commitment when I decided to enter. When I told my mother, she said, “If you put on the veil, do not ever take it off.” Of course, I eventually did.
advice for others working to advance CSA’s Mission
I really have no advice but to try to keep your values always in mind and to continue to acknowledge your own limitations as you keep struggling.

That we are able to live with the assumption that we are all imperfect and are willing to acknowledge it.
How the CSA charism continues to inspire her
I find it difficult to distinguish the CSA charism from that of any Christian who is struggling to do the will of God.

An experience that affirms your lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious
Ten or more years ago I chose to do my summer retreat using one of our hermitages on the ledge. The idyllic quiet and grounds aided prayer as only essence can provide. It was suggested in a book I had along that one might choose to write a personal Magnificat. I share that now as it most succinctly expresses my lifelong commitment to our totally gracious God:
With all creation I acclaim that God is good; God is always good!
God has been light in my darkness, strength in my weakness, faithful from year to year.
Holy is the One who blesses my abundantly.
Holy is the One who is my source of hope.
Holy is the One in whom I am at home.
Nurture my small efforts of love and devotion, that like flowers of the field, that may be praise to You, God of Life.
advice for others working to advance CSA’s Mission
The following 'advice' is actually some borrowed wisdom which has been a source of strength for me over many years. John Keats wrote: I am certain of nothing but the truth of the imagination and the holiness of the heart's affections. Live your dreams and love from your center.
On a lighter note, I also share this from an unknown source: Sing like you don't need the money. Love like you'll never get hurt. Dance like no one is watching. This dictum needs no interpretation!
a blessing she would like to share
Perhaps this blessing is foremost in my mind because it is daily present: I thank God that I can minister “to the 2's and 92's”...the phrase coined by Sr. Catherine Stewart, OP, when she lived with us.
Each morning I start my day giving breakfast to 2 and 3 year olds at Christian Parents for Kids Day Care. As the morning progresses there is time for play, singing, reading to them, potty and the project which builds learning. Upon leaving, three hours later, I say “Sister has to go to work now”...a phrase that means, (like mommy or daddy), I have to go, but I love you always.
I am off, then, to Nazareth Court and Center where I drive our retired Sisters to various appointments they may have, as assigned. The Sister are unfailingly appreciative and their promise of prayer means much to me.
I feel blessed to work with the little ones because they are beautiful and fun. I feel blessed to work with the elderly because they are beautiful and fun. Lucky me!
How the CSA charism continues to inspire her
I am daily inspired by my Sisters who do so well living the CSA Charism. I see joyful witnesses to the Risen Christ, singing so sweetly at Mass, noticing such small but meaningful ways to help one another, maintaining a sense of hope and purpose. It is a vibrant prayer life that continues their missionary zeal....we shall never comprehend God's economy, but surely prayer sets the standard.
Lastly, I want to say it is my opinion that Ordinary Sisters, the story of the Sisters of St. Agnes, is itself an epitome of the CSA Charism. Before publication, Sr. Margaret asked what I thought of that possible title. I was not at all sure about the choice then, but now the truth, beauty and wisdom within the book assures me that Ordinary Sisters is an extremely high compliment.

An experience that affirms her lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious
I don’t have one story that could do justice to affirm my lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious. Opportunities have been placed before me because I was about CSA’s mission. Many times, one ministry led me into another. For example, I left teaching because I felt I could help children more as a school counselor. I ended up working in a parish and school, ministering as both a school and a family counselor. I became more involved with the diocese by learning how to take briefs for individuals who were petitioning for an annulment. Ministering at Marian University as a counselor in Student Life, I came in touch with students who were struggling as single parents to support their family and attain a bachelor’s degree. As a result of the Student Life staff pulling together, we were able to create a fund to help with housing and childcare. The successful six-year outcomes caught the attention of the college president who knew the right donor to ask for more funding thus resulting in the successful Working Family Program. Everything connected; I remember thinking if my choices for ministry were just left up to me and I didn’t have community members to consult and learn from, my life would have been very boring as I had planned it.
advice for others working to advance CSA’s Mission
It is gratifying to know people who work to advance CSA’s Mission. I have the privilege of working with two associates. The three of us make up a department. It is a new experience to be with lay people who understand the CSA Mission and implement it in their daily choices and challenges. In my situation I have no advice just gratitude. Many times, they bolster me up and remind me of our mission.
a blessing she would like to share
There are many blessings I have received from CSA. The one blessing I am most grateful for and never thought I would need was how CSA let me come to the aid of my 11-year-old niece who unexpectedly became an orphan. I was able to continue my ministry and meet the emotional needs of my niece and parents. With the economic support left from her parents and the support from leadership, I was free to provide a home for my niece until she became an adult. The sisters extended themselves and the CSA charism of hospitality more than they ever thought possible!
How the CSA charism continues to inspire her
The CSA charism inspires me because I know it is not stagnant. We continuously study, reflect, and pray for inspiration to keep our CSA gift alive and relevant. Sharing the experience of the process of continuing the CSA charism with associates automatically extends its life and inspires CSA and associates to continue giving our gifts and living our mission.

An experience that affirms your lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious
I'm called the "Neighborhood Nun" where I live in Milwaukee. I've been asked to bless the weddings of some of their children, officiate at burials of some of their family members, even stopped on the street one morning to pray with a neighbor having surgery. When one neighbor's grandkids are playing outside, they'll shout, "Gramma, your sister is here!" when I come out my back door. This reminds me that I have been privileged to companion others in simple presence and everyday times. I've been blessed to be touched and inspired by many on my journey as a teacher, administrator, artist, author and spiritual companion. What I treasure most is when they say, "You're so real." After 50 years I love being and "Ordinary Sister" and the "Neighborhood Nun!"
advice for others working to advance CSA’s Mission
Be simple, be real, be kind. Let your spirituality come from your heart. Mostly, take time to share beauty, love and laughter in the paradox of life.
a blessing she would like to share
I'm grateful that I was influenced by many wonderful women who helped me discover my woman soul and be able to give voice to her through my art. I'm grateful for family and friends who have journeyed with me and midwifed me through many transitions.
How the CSA charism continues to inspire her
There is something so wonderful about being part of an American founded congregation that grew from courageous initiatives, simplicity and strong women. I believe those roots continue to inspire me to be creative and courageous in confronting the unjust structures in church and society today. I also believe our charism is steeped in traditions of art, music, poetry and mystical spirituality that continues to give me hope.

An experience that affirms her lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious
During my morning wait at the bus stop on 23rd Street and 10th Avenue, one of my routes to work at The Dwelling Place, another passenger who often takes the same bus, started to engage in conversations wishing me a good day or talking about something going on in the news, friendly bus stop chit-chat. Then one morning, he introduced himself by name to me and asked me where I am from, as I don't have a New York accent, and what kind of work I do. This led to the revelation that I am Joann, a Sister of St. Agnes living at The Leo House and working at a shelter for homeless women. He paused for a few moments and said, "It must feel good to know you are doing things that make such a difference in people's lives. I have been working in construction here in the city for several years. It seems that for my company making money has become more important than helping people. I have been looking for a place where I can use my talents to make a real difference." In subsequent conversations, he asked questions such as: What does it mean to be a sister? Why would you leave your family behind to come to NY? What other work have you done? Do you find supporting the women at the shelter to be meaningful and rewarding for you? In responding to Matthew's heartfelt questions, I found myself reflecting back on my 50 years as a Sister of St. Agnes. With gratitude and sincerity, I could tell him that the commitment and choices I have made in my life have brought me deep joy. I have been blessed to feel the love and support of my family and my sisters in community. I have had the opportunity to share life and ministry with so many wonderful and diverse people who have touched my heart and shaped me as a woman religious. Over the years, I have had times of delight and times of great personal challenge. Growing to trust in God who placed the call to religious life in my heart, I can stand at the bus stop, in the shelter, among my sisters, or wherever CSA calls me, knowing that my journey is guided by God's presence and grace. This is my joy and my strength.
advice for others working to advance CSA’s Mission
Trust the stirrings of your heart. Believe that, just as in the days of our founders, your missionary zeal, your courageous initiatives, and your deep faith are needed today to bring healing and peace to our longing world.
a blessing she would like to share
May the longings of your heart lead you to discover deep joy that endures even in life's dark moments. May you be surrounded by people who love you into life and generosity, who challenge you to shine, and who stand by you in moments of vulnerability and in moments of success. May you celebrate life and bless the world with your presence and care.
How the CSA charism continues to inspire her
Our call to be women filled with missionary zeal, undaunted in our efforts to embrace courageous initiatives, and centered in deep faith inspires me more and more each day. Listening to the women at The Dwelling Place and experiencing the great divides in our country and around the world, our CSA call to respond to those whose faith life or human dignity are threatened becomes so real for me. I have witnessed the healing power of genuine hospitality and joyful service and strive to make these a mark of my daily presence and ministry. Like the living words of scripture, our CSA charism is new each day!

An experience that affirms your lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious
Recently as I was teaching the last day of a 4-day training, one of the participants shared a story about her tumultuous and abusive childhood. At one point as a little girl, when she had had all she could take, she went to visit one of the Sisters in her parish seeking advice. The reply she received at the time was less than the compassionate and understanding guidance for which she was hoping. Now, decades later in this class, she felt the kindness and compassion that she so needed as a child from a vowed woman religious. Revisiting that memory, she was then able to begin healing. The affirmation that I regularly receive of my lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious is a humbling experience.

a blessing she would like to share
As I look back over 50 years of living the vowed life with the Sisters of St. Agnes, I know that I have received “blessings in good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over” (Luke 6:38). They come easily to mind: a deepening relationship with God, lasting friendships, opportunities to learn and grow, living with or visiting sisters in different parts of the United States and Nicaragua, to name a few.
Ministering in Gallup and Farmington, New Mexico was one of the greatest blessings in my life. I served in the Gallup diocese in parish ministry first at the Cathedral and then at St. Mary’s in Farmington. One year, just prior to being elected to a leadership position in the community, I lived with another sister among the Laguna people in their pueblo while working for the Diocese of Gallup.
Among the many blessings was a strong bond of community among the sisters. Although the distances between us could mean hours of travel, we gathered nearly every month for prayer, community discussions and celebration. Each year we connected with our sisters in Arizona for a Thanksgiving Day feast followed by days of community meetings.
We say in the constitution that we “are enriched by those we serve.” In the Gallup diocese I was living among, working with and serving people of many different cultures, but especially Hispanic and Native American. Among the Hispanics in the Gallup Diocese were the descendants of Spanish settlers, second-and third-generation Mexican immigrants, and recent immigrants, each with a shared but diverse culture. Native American tribes in the diocese include the Navajo, Zuni, Hopi, Apache, and Pueblo peoples, each rich in diversity and tradition. They broadened my vision, expanded my horizon, and deepened in me a reverence and respect for Mother Earth and her gifts.
New Mexico, “The Land of Enchantment,” gifted me with its unique beauty, dry climate and daily dose of sunshine. I would often say that my spirit found a home there. I know there is a spirit of the Southwest that remains with me yet today.
In the fifteen years I lived in New Mexico I truly can say that I received “blessings in good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over.”

advice for others working to advance CSA’s Mission
As St. Francis of Assisi once said: “Preach the Gospel always. If necessary, use words.”
a blessing she would like to share
My 25 years in CSA have been a blessing in so many ways. Most importantly I am blessed to live a life where my spiritual growth is important and central to my daily life and is supported by the larger CSA community.
How the CSA charism continues to inspire her
The charism to respond to those whose faith life or human dignity is threatened is one with which I most resonate. In my teaching of students at Marian University to my work on the General Council, I am reminded daily to treat all human beings as humans created in the image of God.

Reflections on religious life
The commitment as a woman of religious vows is in daily living within community, family, ministry, the Church, and all that is implied in relation to all of creation. The current reality invites me to be a woman of hope who puts her trust in the Lord and, at the same time, to raise my voice to proclaim the values of the kingdom; to be able to embody the vocation of today.
As our constitution reminds us, “we participate in the mission of Christ through joyful service.” As baptized in the love of Christ, we commit ourselves to others.
In this modern time when everything can be done via the Internet, to be in a space where we can serve, embrace, help, and look at things through eyes of love, to share and celebrate is a true blessing.
The love that unites us in the way that we share our lives with its sole purpose which each of us carries, inspires me each day for the service to others; and we are enriched daily by those who share with us our ministry.

I have cherished the opportunity to be the Director of Associate Relationship over the past six years. Working with compassionate, kind and loving sisters and associates who desire to live Christ’s mission has been a blessing for which I am grateful and one that deeply touches my soul.
What Drew Her to the Associate Relationship
Witnessing love as a verb by Sisters of St. Agnes drew me to Associate Relationship. Around that time, I had participated in two mission trips to Rosita, Nicaragua and felt called to look at life in a new way. In my encounters with the sisters in Nicaragua I observed joyful service, genuine care, and humble acknowledgement that they too are among the needy and enriched by those they serve. Here in my hometown, I participated in CSA’s mission to uphold each person’s human dignity by taking part in their peace and justice initiatives. My desire to become an associate came through these experiences, I felt a connection and solidarity with those who support and live out the values that I hold dear.

A Story that Reaffirms Her Commitment
In the corporate world, being an associate is being part of the team and representing the company in all you do. As a CSA Associate, I feel not only as part of the "team", but as part of the CSA family, who represents the charism of CSA in all I do- as a nurse, teacher, Christian, mom, grandma, and a member of society. Every day of my life affirms my commitment as a CSA Associate.
A Blessing She Would Like to Share
My blessing is to be a part of something bigger than myself- as a CSA Associate, I am grateful for the sisters and associates who demonstrate to me loving kindness as I donate, volunteer, mentor, and bring the charism of CSA into every activity I participate in. I thank God for you all!
What Drew Her to the Associate Relationship
CSA has been a part of my life since I started St Mary's Grade school many years ago, and have since had the privilege of caring for some of those very same sisters and associates as a nurse, meeting at gatherings (Hello Sr Sharon!), and being mentored by my Aunt and her household, two with whom I now hold in fond memory since their passing. From there, it was the loving example of my parents, Bill and Kathy Emmer, who noticed my desire to be associated with something greater, especially concerning social justice issues, and brought me along to various gatherings and encouraged me to become part of the Associate movement.
What It Means to Her to be Celebrating Jubilee as an Associate of CSA
I cannot believe it has been 15 years since my first commitment! Filling out annual commitments forms have consciously encouraged me to be engaged, to be grateful for the experience, and helps me continue to share the charism of CSA in all I do.

An Experience that Confirms Her Associate Commitment
Since Bishop Salvador Schlaefer was also my mother's cousin, I have felt drawn to Nicaragua and have visited twice with the parish, once with United Hearts for Health and three times as a Board member with Adelante Mujer. I have much enjoyed contact with Sisters Marise Meis and Anabel Torres. I only wish I had more time and resources to give.
A Blessing She Would Like to Share
Recently I looked at the statue of Mary at the top of the ledge at SMSA. My thought was "there is the Blessed Virgin" and at the bottom of the spring we are all blessed mothers - not THE Blessed Mother, but those of us who have given birth or nurtured children in any way - teaching, nursing, etc., are certainly blessed for having had that experience. I thank God for all of us!
What Drew Her to the Associate Relationship
Sister Cecelia Schlaefer is my late mother's cousin, Sister Ruth Battaglia is also related to me through my mother. I was "raised" by the sisters at Sacred Heart School and St. Mary's Springs and at one time considered being a sister myself. (I reconsidered because I did not want to wear dresses and skirts all the time - then they changed but too late!) I consider CSA sisters and associates to be my best friends. The social justice commitments are very important to me.
