Jubilee Joy
Jubilarian Artwork by Doris Klein
"It is said by indigenous people in many lands that the hummingbird brings joy and opens hearts to love. This hummingbird represents the Graced presence of God’s Love over the lifetimes of those celebrating Jubilee, freeing them to joyfully serve. We share in celebration of them and the multiple ways they have brought joy to so many with their service, inspiration and encouragement. With gratitude we honor and bless the wonderful, colorful beauty of their wisdom and presence in our world today."

An experience that affirms her lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious
As I celebrate my 70 years as a Sister of St. Agnes, the continuing grace of my lifelong commitment to religious life is in the practicing of my community’s charism of simplicity and hospitality.
SIMPLICITY gives me the freedom to live by trusting in God’s providence, living in community, sharing all I have, realizing that nothing is so-called mine.
HOSPITALITY affirms my strong belief about being open to everyone, welcoming all who come to the door and the Jesus within them. I am committed to treating all as I would want to be treated. I try never to let the sun go down without reconciling with anyone I may have offended during the day.
I wish to thank my family and my CSA sisters and associates for the support I have received during all my years in religious life. I ask God to bless all those I have touched and all those who have touched me. I have served with joy. I wish the best for those who have been and continue to be part of my life.

An experience that affirms her lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious
While I was teaching, I remember a family moved into town and enrolled in our school. His little girl was a delightful child and took to me like glue. After awhile, the father asked me if I would leave the convent and become his wife. At that time many Sisters were leaving the convent. I thought, “Maybe that’s what God wants me to do.” First, I would pray to see what God wants me to do. I told him that it was a big decision and I needed time to pray about it. I call my dad and asked him to pray with me. My dad stormed heaven. My sister, Lucy, asked me to come home for her youngest daughter’s Baptism. While at home I read her Catholic paper. It said, “Come back to me from whom you have strayed.” I asked my sister if I could cut out this clipping. That was my answer after praying for a month. When I got home, I called the man and told him I now have the answer. “I would remain a Sister.” He just would not accept it. I told him on the advice of Sister John Baptist that I couldn’t visit with him anymore. This was it. It was so hard, but I had to remain firm. I was promised everything. God became so very important to me.
A blessing she would like to share
Here’s another incident of my giving Communion to my people. As I was nearing the place where I was going to get off the train, I saw a great big field. Here there was a great big circle of people with a woman being stoned. I thought “Oh, my goodness!” it looks like the Days of the Romans. Lord, what do you want me to do? “IF I truly love You, I will go over there and stand beside her.” I remember a little cup that someone gave me. I treasured it. “I am with You always,” I said, “God, You are with me and I was never afraid before, but now I am. What should I do? Different thoughts came to my mind. I can’t do it because I don’t have any of my documents with me. God, you do it for me because I’m a coward again. I walked over and stood behind the crowds. All of a sudden, they dropped their stones and walked away. A man shook his finger at me. I recognized him from Pershno. Then I knew God did it. In my heart I was ashamed because I didn’t go and stand beside her. It was the power of God. I hurried and gave Holy Communion to my people and quickly returned home on the train. I felt my going to Russia was like a strengthening of my faith. I took God for granted and I can’t. God is ever new. He’s always refreshing. He’s always there to help in my crisis. God is with me every moment of the way.

An experience that affirms her lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious
My decision to pursue Religious Life in CSA occurred on Pentecost Sunday in 1959. I was completing my first year at St. Agnes School of Nursing (SASN). To satisfy my curiosity I attended CSA’s first Open House – Come and See, a convent experience. I was introduced to the women who were Postulants at that time. All were quietly friendly and welcoming. The true significance of the day was near the conclusion where we gathered in the Music Room of the convent. The Novitiate Choir sang. As I listened, I distinctly heard the words “Here is where you will find your happiness.” It was all I needed. The next day I met with Sister Mary Agreda to share my experience and admit my interest in Religious Life. I wrote my letter to Mother Rosita, asking permission to enter CSA. Then an interview with her. By September 1959 I was entering the convent door, leaving my parents and sisters behind. When I had told my parents of my decision, my dad assured me that if I tried this and discovered it was not for me, I could come home. My response was firm. “This is something I will do. Whenever I wavered over the years, I recalled this experience and reaffirmed my commitment.
Advice for others working to advance CSA’s Mission
Be authentic and sincere. Know yourself and generously share your gift(s) and talent(s) whatever they are. Only a few attain headlines in the news; but people can be read easily by others in day-to-day living. So, show them the Joy of Christ living and breathing in and through you.
A blessing she would like to share
A blessing I have cherished is the trust CSA leadership has shown me: Mother Rosita, in allowing me to complete my nursing education at SASN. Sister Jean for encouraging me to establish a massage therapy practice for the general public as well as for CSA. As she said, “You will learn much.” And, so I have; touching the lives/bodies of people from all over the world literally. I have been blessed and have had opportunities to bless hundreds of people. I thank and praise God for this.
How the CSA charism continues to inspire her
It is the stabilizing force within that energizes me to persevere in today’s unpredictable existence – and future.

An experience that affirms her lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious
God called and I responded. Faith in that call is the foundation of my lifelong commitment as a woman religious. Many experiences have affirmed that call. One unusual affirmation came from a woman who identified two of us as "nuns" although we wore no identifying clothes or symbols. She said she could tell because we had a "glow" about us. With or without the glow, I find affirmation among those who respond positively to the mere presence of Sisters among them, as is true in the parish and community where I am presently serving.
Advice for others working to advance CSA’s Mission
Always remember that CSA's Mission is Christ's Mission. Our history, charism and spirit may give it a CSA "flavor," but it is first, last and forever Christ's work that we are about. For this reason we are "rooted in Christ." This rootedness frees us to serve in peace and joy "that the Risen Christ may be discovered and revealed." We are happy and blessed to be "the weak of the world that confound the strong." How exciting!
A blessing she would like to share
Religious life itself, with its opportunities for education and ministry, is a blessing. It has enabled me to develop an intimate relationship with God and to serve in areas of ministry that I would never have imagined. A three-month sabbatical proved to be a transforming experience of intimacy with God that totally changed my life and spirituality. From that experience I grew into ministries in which I served with and among great and holy people.
How the CSA charism continues to inspire her
The CSA charism of commitment "to those whose faith life or human dignity is threatened" is timeless. Being deeply rooted in the Gospel, it comes straight from Christ's own heart. He made it very clear that his compassion for the poor and oppressed must be ours. What trust Christ places in us! That inspires me!

An experience that affirms her lifelong commitment as a vowed woman religious
From 1996 - 1998 I took an exclaustration from the community and used the time to rethink and reevaluate my call. Upon my return to CSA, I was welcomed and affirmed in my decision.
Advice for others working to advance CSA’s Mission
The CSA mission revolves around the principle of our care for those whose faith life or human dignity is threatened. When making choices about what to do or where to do the ministry, this principle is the guiding factor in the choice.
A blessing she would like to share
People have been the blessing in my life. This starts with my CSA community and extends to the co-workers, clients, students, and faculties with whom I have worked over the years.
How the CSA charism continues to inspire her
The CSA charism of hospitality leads me to open heart and home to others. The option for the poor leads me in my choice of ministry type and location.

My first job as a clinical psychologist was at a residential treatment center for children and adolescents. One day I met a young child, age 5, whose first question was “Are you going to kill me?” her mother had lit her dress on fire leaving burn scars over 50% of her body. “NO,” I said, “we don’t murder people here.” Being present to the utter pain and cruelty of the human situation is a stark reminder of how important our incarnational presence is in this world.

I will never forget this experience because it affirms my commitment as a religious. Sharing with the Sisters in the United States was a great challenge, because I did not understand the language and also the cold. But I saw everything as normal and I walked with them and learned a lot from there. I have the opportunity to accompany them in their ministries and to participate with the other people in their work, also to see the different cases and a thousand ways of thinking to participate in the church in the school with the pre-school children. I continue to say YES to my religious life with my Sisters in Nicaragua, where we also walk together and I continue to strengthen my spiritual life both in the community and at work.

An experience that affirms his commitment as a CSA Associate
In response to my own understanding of being called to Lord Jesus' mission as presented in Luke 4:18-19, I noticed that the values and mission of the CSA sisters while teaching at Marian College/University were my values as well. I aspire to those values of hospitality, concern for the poor, women and the environment, and justice and peace. In light of that mission, I founded the Fond du Lac Center for Spirituality and Healing, a non-profit holistic health center, with the initial secretarial help of Helen Renzelman in 2000 and later with Mary Mollison, as the president of the board. I joined the JPIC committee later and The Center provided rental space for some CSA Sisters as spiritual counselors and massage therapists. Currently, I am a member of the Associate Seekers Home Circle and continue with the JPIC committee.
A Blessing He Would Like to Share
I pray that the Presence of God be more and more real in all of the Sisters' and Associates' lives. I pray that this Presence become tangible and palpable in all of our lives. I share with each of the Sisters and Associates the double-sided hug of Helen Renzelmann.
What Drew Him to the Associate Relationship
We have the same mission and values, especially the mission of social justice, as lived out by my associate discerning partner, Caryl Hartjes. When Caryl was arrested for doing disobedience, I knew that I wanted to associate with people who stood up to the oppressive, militaristic culture that was continuing to harm people.
WHAT IT MEANs TO him TO BE CELEBRATING JUBILEE AS AN ASSOCIATE OF CSA
I am thankful that I am still alive to continue this journey and long to work even more closely with the Sisters and Associates to build the Kingdom/Presence of God in people's internal world and external society.

What Drew Her to the Associate Relationship
I was drawn to the CSA Associate relationship after hearing Sister Caryl Hartjes speak about her experience at School of the Americas the year she was arrested and about her time in prison. I then attended a program in Founders Hall. It lasted all day and was presented by Sister Dianne Bergant. I didn’t know she was a Sister of St. Agnes, I just knew I wanted to hear more of what she was saying. I also was very impressed by the friendliness of the sisters and associates.
Next I read the statement on Peace and Nonviolence and I knew this is where I belonged. I knew God had brought me here.

15 years ago, I was in a very dark place, I was separated from my husband, I worked fulltime and took care of the house and kids, I was drawn to the Sisters of St Agnes. I needed someone to look up to and that I respected. I could not think of any better group of women then the sisters.
WHAT IT MEANs TO HER TO BE CELEBRATING JUBILEE AS AN ASSOCIATE OF CSA
