History
Sponsorship of ministries by CSA has been a long and evolving relationship. Early in its history, CSA responded to the needs of the time and the call of the Church by establishing St. Agnes Hospital (Fond du Lac, Wisconsin), St. Anthony Hospital (Hays, Kansas), St. Clare Hospital (Monroe, Wisconsin), and Marian College (Fond du Lac, Wisconsin). These institutions belonged to--were owned by--the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes in a single civil law corporation. CSA's legal and canonical responsibilities were carried out by the General Council of the Congregation. Congregation members served as faculty, nurses, administrators, and staff in these institutions.

In time, however, it became necessary to bring CSA-owned institutions into a new civil law relationship with the Congregation. In the 1960s, therefore, the Sisters of St. Agnes moved from directly owning their institutions to separately incorporating them. By providing primary administrative and operational staff, CSA influence was ensured in the governance, policies, and spirit of the ministries.

In the latter part of the 20th century, it became increasingly clear that a religious congregation must seek new ways to relate to its separately incorporated ministries if it was to remain faithful to its historical charism, spirit, and ministry, as well as to canon law and to new developments in the Church's self-understanding, particularly regarding true collaboration with the laity in Christian ministry. Thus, the Congregation invited lay persons to partner in its ministry of sponsorship and created a new sponsorship structure, utilizing the member corporation structure found in civil law.
