Vowed Membership  -  Our Formative Process . . .

Becoming a vowed member of the Sisters of St. Agnes

Once a woman contacts CSA to inquire about religious life and our community, the vocation directress will companion her through a process of discernment, assisting her on her journey to discover God's call for her and in particular to CSA.

This process normally includes:

  • Initial and ongoing contact with the vocation directress.
  • Information gathering through formal and informal interviews to assess the woman's background, motivation, needs and readiness in the process.
  • Opportunities to get to know CSA members through congregational celebrations, community prayer and meals, Come and See weekends, visits to the Motherhouse and other CSA sites.
At the appropriate time and through mutual discernment, the woman may begin the "formal" application process for entrance into the membership process with guidance from the vocation directress. The vocation directress then submits the application and materials to the leadership team of the congregation. Upon acceptance, the woman enters the Affiliate Phase of the membership process.

Affiliate: (Requirements for entrance) After completing an application and an interview process, the woman enters into a time of mutual discernment with CSA in which she reflects on her call to religious life and in particular to CSA.  The woman is introduced to the elements of religious life as lived by the Sisters of St. Agnes.

Pre-Novitiate:  During this time the woman lives in CSA local community to deepen her understanding of religious life and to further discern her call with CSA. With the guidance of a sister companion the woman experiences CSA's values, spirit, traditions, and spirituality while actively participating in community life.

Novitiate: The focus of the novitiate is to prepare for a life of union with Christ Jesus through community and ministry. This intense two-year period is a sacred time for growth in the spiritual life, study of theology, vows, CSA community and CSA heritage. Through further discernment and inner conversion of heart, this gifted time culminates with the profession of first vows in the Congregation.

Temporary Profession:  A time of living the vows in community and engaging in ministry. Vows are renewed while the woman continues to grow and integrate this way of life.  Upon mutual discernment the woman enters into profession of life-long commitment as a Sister of St. Agnes.

Perpetual Profession:  This significant movement and decision establishes a woman's full incorporation into the Congregation.  "She assumes lifelong responsibility for the vitality and mission of the Congregation and her own life in Christ." (CSA Constitutions #82)

"We consider our formation a lifelong process

of individual growth in identification with Jesus Christ

and we help one another to be open

to this process in all the circumstances of our lives." (CSA Constitutions #57)
